the watertop
frothing in its chop

black water
deep water
and a current
that slips sleep
forever
and far away

stove
hissing
the maple
wrapped in hot
morsel coals
all these aches
of life and agonies
ebbed with its
rich fever

the kettle steaming

all the fire dancers
cast shadows
from the cracks
like a cask of light

and the night
sucks at the joints
of the house

and the wind sings
haunted and fretful
