riders before the storm
i remember night times and the light shinning from the kitchen globe on the lawn the fence line and the tall grasses where the lawn was not cut and the night winds thick and blowing in the upper reachs of the balsams
the screen door keeping out the moths and June bugs and lightening flashing far and distant on the edge of the hills across the flat wetlands just a kid caught in the deep mystery of the mood standing there with the wind tousling my hair not afraid of the pitch darkness around the back of the kitchen like this waiting for the storm to get here for the rain that would pound on the windows and shake the house thunder against the slope of the attic room we lived in my face wet as we would pile into the huge old car the vinyl seats the heavy doors the dashboards green glow and single needle the run from the parking place to the house always running i remember that the maple wild with wind
