that summer
long ago

sitting under the cool shadow
of the bridge
traffic whinning low
rumbling

the river churning
green and black

we swam
in cool relief
on sand banks

watched the bright
sun on yellow grass
dragonflies danced

the pack heavy
to haul
facing North
and walking backwards
