pewter

its so cold
and beautiful
quiet here
so far from the gulf
weather

we all would perish
without hydro
or natural gas
no more coal shipped
in by rail
no more firewood
the city too vast now
and modern

our houses huge
in comparison to turn
of the century brick
or small frame dwellings
some still of log
some still with wood
pellets...driven with
an electric fan

dependent on our
system
dependent on our money

cleaner air
less risks

but out there
with just our day clothes
and parkas and mitts
we would be hard pressed
to make it a full night

just an illusion what we
wear....our short walks
to the bus consuming fuel
our vast huge malls
our large north american
homes for summer

so we survive
our marvels sustaining
us

and the cycles keep watch
and the wolves stay away
