b l a c k o u t

heat wavers and ripples
mirage at the edges
tendrils of mystic
and surreal
plasma

will another blackout
emerge
from all this energy demand
burn more coal
split more atoms
build more turbines
and flood valuable
timberlands
turn trash into heat
smelt rubbish into killowatts

and then
D A R K N E S S

and will we look up again
upon that forgotten sky
at night
deep in the valleys of the city
where voices echo
no fans only motorcars
with their probing lights
like cruising through the hoodoos
of the desert
seeking refuge
passage
through twist
and turn
