Shawanaga and Magnetewan Rez

the reserve life was compact
everyone knew everyone practically
and there was always gossip about what and who was with whom and what happened or would happen etc and everyone
would do things at the community centre
together I was a true village in that sense The Hub was the band office
where there was always something going
on and a pot of coffee chairs to sit
on Maybe catch the van bus into the nearest town if one had money and had
to get groceries And then in town
there was the native freindship centre
which again had something always going on and there was coffee there and chairs to sit on and a bulletin board
for what was going to happen in the near future Everyone had a nickname
eventually around the villages
it was fun and depressing all in the same isolation and poverty and alcoholism rolled into one
it was different then life off reserve
I am glad I went and lived there the
summer and winter though because now
I have some kind of idea about how
other people live
........
