warm winter

raining out
damp tears from above
my jacket streaming in short time
the dog and I for a stroll
night people stepping past
with their damp umbrellas
and we go in our silences
through the streets
and chrome cars

soon in the north the winter
will slink away
the earth will emerge
from its sleep
and the land will awaken
but for now
the ice is sliding off the
roof in great rumbling occasions
and our trail to the lake is
still deep with snow

but i am here in toronto
this evening where there is no
snow left
and warmth prevails
