grim notable

the ice is frozen on the lake
again
you know it might stay this time
or if it rains maybe not

there is talk of the frost reaching
down into the uninsulated ground
you know just inching its way layer
after layer until it gets to all
those juicy watermains and sewer
mains wraps its icy tentacles around
them and pulls on them until
they shatter

way north of here two weeks ago an
old man went out on his snow machine
on a lake with only two inches of
ice went right out on it
just buzzed off from shore

I would think that after being around
for a few years that common sense
would wear a groove into the brain
the kind of sense that keeps us alive
keeps us going

but not in that case

after he was reported missing the
police went searching and found
the snow machine tracks leading to
a hole in the ice
after some winter diving they found
him

"Jees Fred the ice is pretty thin
out there on the lake"

"nonsense thats good strong two
inch ice hell its northern ice
i'm not afraid of being the first
one to go out there on 'er
i'm old enough to know better
about this and wise so away i'll
go right now after i put on my
safety helmet....."

its always the young and the old
who perish first in wars famines
floods and foolishness

I mean I'm like what was he thinking
was he so set on being on the ice
at that time of year just because
for year after year the ice had
formed from the cold weather that
we just havent had this year

is global warming to blame???

couldnt he have reasoned that maybe
just maybe it was NOT the right time
to be on the ice that maybe
it was too warm that it could
possibly happen even though warm
weather may never ever have
kept the ice so thin ever

maybe he just forgot he was just
so used to getting out his sled
and filling the tank full of gas
driving it around the trails and
just being on the ice at this time

maybe its just natures way of keeping
the stock healthy of keeping the
herd culled of the weak

story bothered me and still does

only because i have come to a
crosswalk and almost kept on walking
right into rushing traffic
once a freind stuck his arm out
and stopped me otherwise i would
have been struck and hurled down
the street by a speeding vehicle
or maybe drowning in ice cold
water is a hell of a way to go
mortality is inevitable
by ice or by donut
