that was then

Sun was weak like watered down tea
the air chilled and frozen blowing
hard the snow light and fluffy
and thick my shovel biting into
it rolling it up in front like
a wave

then heaving it up on top the
tall banks
step back and start again
listening to Chickadees in the
tall hedge next door

so cold
pushing the big shovel along the
sidewalk trail then up making a
dumping pile climbing ever higher
like tailings from an old mine

thinking the whole while of the
family the original family
the old cars in the drive
one in the old garage
the ancient white Westinghouse
Refrigerator with tiny freezer
our downstairs freezer
the constant water running through
thebasement built on rock

mason jars full of preserves
potatos apples
and the warm wooden work bench
with all his tools

the living room where we would
all gather their matching
recliners the old couch the two
chairs the flip top stereo with
turntable and eight track
the living room window looking
down Fern Glen Road the car headlights
shinning in with every car coming
up to meet the old #592

our room in the converted attic
the small dormer window
so cold in the winter up there
our beds frozen when we were put
to bed just the light from the
streetlamp across the road on the
lonely pole by Bill McKernans
a hundred watt bulb a green ceramic
hood

wake up early for breakfest made
by my dad as he was getting ready
for work on the railroad listening
to the whistling staticy radio
local radio CKAR station Huntsville
Ontario

mom would get up later for afternoon
shift at the old Huntsville hospital
as nurses aide
before that she was an operator
at the old East Parry Sound Telephone
office in Emsdale
the desk was the old pull and plug
system from around the thirties at
least one of the last private owned
telephone systems ever before finally
being taken over by Bell Canada
the seventies

School was hell

followed by life
