winter arrives after all that warmth..
the cold sopping gritty gravel strewn
sidewalks and puddles of mud that cars
would hit..cant help it and splash us..

didnt seem right....Then boom..wake up
and humidity is gone...damned clear..
Steam coming from the gas vents atop
the tall steep rooflines...You just know
before you even step out....

went to the store...Bike cleaned oiled
polished...brakes revamped and working.
but skipping on the gear....Chain is not
for this bike...off some old worn out
wreck....and this bike is worn...restoring
is hard work....so it skips a little...

across the overpass heading in the wind
coming from across the distant lake
hidden by buildings and the little hills
it was cold! an understatement....it
hurt bad...Even through my skimpy hat
and mittens and no scarf...where my
exposed skin was open....the cold just
stung....

We as kids got bundled up good!...snow
suits and sweaters and winter socks and
decent snowboots...parents cared about us
they remembered the cold as they were
and did grew up in the depression ..money
was tight..only one pair of boots to get
you through a few years..

I can hear my moms voice or dads and the
people my age and younger and older..
Where are your socks....I dont wear them
half the time just stand on the bristly
welcome mat under the porch to have a smoke
...no socks half the time...No scarf...I
did have this long beautiful one...but lost
that...its okay...fashion statement over.
but freeze...damn...

happy to get home...the bikes inner gear
latch quit working..had to stop..the pedals
just spun not catching on the rear sprocket
had to bounce the rear tire a few times
until the pedals would catch..Yah it has
issues..

So New Year is tonight..I got some hours
sleep earlier...will head up and try to
get some more....actually resting more
for a change.....The more one stays awake
the more one reverts to the primitive...
let alone should one use stimulants to keep
going....jeckyl and hyde...
